Replacement Hanger Eye Bolts For The Menai Suspension Bridge Refurbishment Project
Brooks Forgings has produced forged components for many historical bridge restoration projects, including the Union Chain Bridge in Northumberland and the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.
Our latest collaboration required the production and supply of replacement solid steel hanger eye bolts for the Menai Suspension Bridge in Anglesey, North Wales.
The Menai Suspension Bridge spans the Menai Strait between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. It was completed in 1826, designed by Thomas Telford, and is a Grade 1 listed structure.
The replacement ‘square section’ hanger eye rods that Brooks Forgings supplied are located between the north and south main towers across the central suspended span. These are attached to a spiral strand and cast clevis hanger assembly, forming the final connection to the main upper chain links.
The eye rods were profiled and machined from S355-J2 material with the grain orientated down its length. They measure 1175mm from rod end to eye center, with a 57mm square shank, and threaded 2.25” BSW over 275mm. The eye has a 133mm outer diameter with a concentric 62mm diameter hole.
