Specialist Production Of Tensioning System Components For Dinorwic Marina Harbour Gate Restoration Project
Nestled on the banks of the Menai Strait in North Wales, Dinorwic Marina, also known as Port Dinorwic, was originally developed in the 18th century as a key port for the Dinorwic Slate Quarry. Its Grade II listed status reflects its significant history, with original features seamlessly blending with modern facilities.
For years, the marina had been in a state of disrepair under its previous ownership. This period was characterised by a lack of investment, resulting in the deterioration of facilities and financial uncertainty for staff. However, the Waterside Consortium, a group of local investors, has stepped up and laid out ambitious plans to restore the marina to its former glory.
A crucial aspect of the restoration work involves the two pairs of original wooden harbour gates, which are slowly failing due to missing, severely deteriorated, and fatigued supporting components.
Brooks Forgings was approached by the consortium to manufacture and supply new tension system components for these gates. Without proper tension, they had become bowed and warped, making them unable to effectively control and hold water.
The lead time for the project was critical, as all restoration work had to be conducted within a very narrow window when the tide was at its lowest. Each tension system, when assembled, measures M36 x 7600 mm and allows for a good range of length adjustment once installed.
Forged eyebolts were supplied in lengths of 650mm and 5800mm, allowing the turnbuckles and couplers to remain offset and above water level for tensioning during and after installation.
A total of eight tensioning system sets were supplied for the project.
